Games based on movies have a long history of being extremely mediocre, mainly because there is always the need to stay true to the film and get the game released along with the movie even if it is not ready.  With a franchise such as Transformers though it would seem that it would be impossible to create a bad game because there is simply an immense amount of material to work off of, along with the above average film.  Traveller’s Tales developed Transformers The Game which released about a week before the film released and to be quite honest, no matter what critics say people are going to purchase it.  It has the Transformers name brand along with it and that in it will garner some great sales.  That doesn’t mean that you can’t heed the opinion of this reviewer though before dropping your $60.

Transformers The Game allows you to play as either the Autobots or the Decepticons.  The game follows a similar pattern laid out by big franchises such as Spiderman and the Hulk as it tries to allow for a big open world which allows you to pretty much destroy anything you desire and have some fun with the characters.  This unfortunately though is not as much enjoyable as it sounds.

The basic idea behind the game is that it is a fairly mediocre button-mashing experience.  There are primary and secondary weapons for each of your Transformers.  The problem though is that the gameplay is so shallow that you will be broken down to using a few different attacks and a throw attack over and over.  The AI does not help this gameplay in any way either as it rarely reacts to your attacks and such in a realistic manner to the universe they are in.  You could shoot an enemy from behind but somehow his shield he holds up in front of him blocks the shot.  This quickly turns it into a button-mashing affair which unfortunately can get old very fast.
