I’ve personally never played the Sing Star series so I can’t compare the mics unfortunately. It looks the real thing is solidly made and comes with an extra long cord. If I’m not mistake wireless versions should be on the way.
Now that about wraps it up for instruments….. Oh wait how could I forget by far the coolest new instrument included the amazingly kick ass drum set. When I first saw these being played on I was totally hooked. When I first played these I was total crap. The drum set is definitely the most difficult instrument to become a master of but it’s you definitely want to get better at them and it’s extremely satisfying when you’ve gotten better.
The drum set has 4 drum pads each with a corresponding color ring to match up with the note chart, you have a foot pedal which you press down when the corresponding yellow bar comes down the note chart and your provided with a pair of official Rock Band drum sticks. It should be noted the drumming they can be quite loud and clacking noise made after you beat on them with drum sticks is pretty annoying. Don’t hold back either as the drum pads can take a serious beating. Drums in real life are pretty damn loud too but there are plenty of solutions available to reduce the noise.
Out of all the instruments in Rock Band once you become an expert player in drums you’ve actually learned how to play the drums in real life, as the game puts it you’ve become a human metronome. Don’t think it’ll be easy though you’ll be breaking up a sweat often. Don’t even get me started on the insanity of the drum note charts in the Metallica DLC songs. As with other instruments you are presented with special power notes to fill up your over drive meter. There are free fill portions of on the drum note chart that give you the chance to show off you awesome solo skills, all you do is have to hit the green cymbal note at the end of the fill and you’ve activated your overdrive meter.
You’re given the option to play the instruments individually in quick play, solo tour modes and you can challenge others via the PSN for duels and point challenges. But where Rock Band really excels is in multiplayer, online and offline. Once again there is no game that can provide the multiplayer experience that Rock Band does. You can play locally with 4 people creating their own individual unique characters via the character creation mode and play the band world tour mode. You can play this very same mode online with anybody on the PSN. The very first time I rocked out with 3 other friends led to a 5 hour non stop Rock Band marathon. Each time after that initial night I’ve had several marathon Rock Band sessions lasting at 4 hours each at least it’s just too fun. I even had a Rock Band New Years party with people who don’t even play video games but just fell in love with this game it was definitely the hit of the night. Drunken Rock Band is even better ☺
