PCN Review: Turtle Beach Ear Force P21 PS3 Headset
Posted on November 9, 2009 by Shak

The in-line amplifier has several audio controls, including the ability to mute the mic, independent chat, bass, game audio controls, and a stereo expander switch. The stereo expander is meant to spread the game audio, in order to give you a fuller game sound. However, although it does work, as I tested on Killzone 2 as well as a few other games, it also creates more white noise in the sound so I preferred to keep it switched off during my testing. The chat boost is a very good feature; this automatically increases the volume of incoming chat so that it isn't covered with louder game sound.

The build quality of the Turtle Beach P21 is fantastic. The headset is comfortable to wear during long gaming sessions, and if you need to take them off, you can conveniently rest them on your shoulders due to the swivelling ear cups. The microphone can also be moved to almost any angle, which again makes the headset that much more comfortable to use.

The P21 can also be connected to your PC, via optional cables available from Turtle Beach, but these won't come with the standard purchase. Turtle Beach Ear Force P21 headsets are available from MadCatz/Gameshark for £69.99 and directly from Turtle Beach for $79.95.

8.5
Performance
Worked perfectly in most of our tests, although stereo expander can affect audio adversely at times.
9.5
Build Quality
Absolutely high quality of build, lightweight and comfortable to use during long gaming sessions. Would have been better if it was wireless.
8.5
Ease of Use
The in-line adapter is very simple to use, although initial setup of the headset may be problematic for some users.
9.0
Value
Relatively cheap for the amount of features you get for your money, especially when compared to some top end Bluetooth headsets. A better alternative (and more expensive) headset is available for surround sound systems.
8.9
Overall
Recommended buy to everyone who can live with the wires, great to get some gaming in without annoying other family members. Also, it would be a good idea to get one if you're looking forward to M.A.G. or Modern Warfare 2.
