Microsoft started off E3 2011, and they began their conference with a 10 minute demo of Modern Warfare 3. I don't know if it was just me, but it almost bored me to sleep watching yet another Call of Duty game that seems to do nothing different. Yes it looked good, but it was nothing special, and the demo tried to make it look exciting, but it just looked boring.
In fact I'd argue that Microsoft's second demo should have been it's first, because the Tomb Raider reboot looked a hell of a lot more interesting than Call of Duty, and I'd argue that it was one of the best demos we saw at any of the conferences. However, I'm not just ranting about Call of Duty here, I'm talking about every vanilla military shooter, because Battlefield 3 looked significantly better than Modern Warfare 3, but my reaction was simple, "yeah it's another Battlefield."
Thankfully, there were some shooters at E3 that actually take some chances. BioShock Infinite looks fantastic, and despite only being CG trailers, Insomniac's OverStrike and Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 actually look like they are trying to do something different.
What do you think? Were you guys excited to see Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3, or did you also think that these franchises are getting boring? After all, the games tend to be basically the same thing over and over again. Despite this, it's a no-brainer that Modern Warfare 3 will still sell 15 million and Battlefield will sell about half as much, even though it looks to be the higher quality game.
