Review - The Last of Us

PCN Review: The Last of Us
Posted on June 11, 2013 by Shak

The Last of Us looks absolutely amazing. There are definitely some reused assets from the Uncharted games, but the urban environments still look amazing and fresh. Particle effects such as spores from infected enemies look great and give a fantastic atmospheric effect to the infected areas. The whole game looks better than most games we've seen during this generation of consoles, and in some cases, better than games we've seen for next generation consoles. However, there are some aliasing issues at times, but they are not very noticeable. There is also the odd glitch when an object may disappear temporarily.

For the most part, this is a relatively slow moving game, but it has a lot of hectic moments, and has a great and involving story. The voice acting is absolutely fantastic and makes the entire story feel that much more believable. Joel and Ellie's voices in particular are brilliant, and the banter between them, whilst not as funny as Uncharted's Nathan Drake, is very realistic and shows that despite growing up in this dog eat dog world, Ellie is still a child even though she tends not to show it. The musical score is very good, and the sound effects on the whole are very realistic.

There is a multiplayer component in The Last of Us, and it uses a lot of elements from the single-player campaign. There are two main modes to choose from; survivor and supply raid. The survivor mode is basically a team deathmatch mode; however you cannot respawn, so you must play as cautiously as you can. The goal is to kill every member of the other team, and you must win 4 of 7 matches to win the game. Supply raid is similar to capture the flag, the goal is to supply and protect your clan that is made up of four people and increasing numbers of NPCs. Your team has can respawn up to 20

The Last of Us is definitely a "Game of The Year" contender, and possibly even the game of the generation award. It has a way of pulling you into the game. You'll find yourself wanting to play this game at all times, and when you're playing it, you won't want to put it down, ever. The single-player campaign is extremely fleshed out, and the story and writing is absolutely fantastic. The multiplayer is also fun, but the meat of this game is the campaign, which will last over 14 hours on your first play through, and with New Game+, there is incentive to play again. This is a must-buy title for PlayStation owners, and Naughty Dog has managed to create yet another masterpiece.

Fantastic graphics, some aliasing issues at times and the odd glitch, but very few and far between. Overall looks fantastic.
Great voice acting and musical score, make the story and whole game feel much more cinematic.
Very well-paced, quiet moments followed by fast hectic moments force you to scavenge as much as possible.
Replay Value
A very long single-player campaign, which is never boring. However I can't see the multiplayer being very engrossing for long.
One of, if not the, best games we've played on the PlayStation 3, and that is not an exaggeration. Definitely a must-buy title for PlayStation 3 owners.
