What are your feelings toward the Blu Ray – HD DVD war?
I’m not that geeked over Blu Ray, likewise I do not have the HD DVD drive for my Xbox 360. I’m not ragging on Sony for having Blu Ray its just that’s why the system costs so much. My 42” Plasma TV looks just fine right now at 1080i.
Sony has included a Blu Ray player in the Playstation 3, do you feel this has helped or hindered sales?
Absolutely hindered it 100%. Here is the interesting thing, Sony has always had a history of trying to re invent the wheel and create their own proprietary technology. Whether it is UMD, Sony Mini Disc, or now Blu Ray. One of these days they are going to nail something and hit the gold mine. But this might not be it.
But by the time you walk out the door with the system, games, and controllers. You’re near a thousand dollars, that’s just too much for me. I was surprised at the cost, but I think their sales are doing ok, though I do think a lot of people bought them in the beginning to resale them to make money. I’m not sure how much longevity that price has.
Do you believe it was smart for Microsoft to get a one year lead in the gaming industry with the Xbox 360?
In hindsight yes, it gives them time to develop. It doesn’t give them much time but it gives them a year to correct mistakes that they saw that consumers were having with the 360. Now the games that are coming out for it are really good and that jump has helped them out a lot.
Nintendo’s “Wii” has been reportedly selling off shelves and dominating the market. How do you feel this will affect the 3rd party developers?
The Wii will have a really strong connection in the beginning. The Wii I think is a little more niche and I probably more like a 5 year system. I just don’t think it will have the longevity. In terms of 3rd party developing, Nintendo has always done what they wanted. Often times its some crazy off the wall Japanese style of game play or system and it always seems to work out for them. So I’m always surprised. I believe it may hinder them a bit, but I think 3rd party developers will actually find ways to create games using the Wii technology, rather than chose to not develop on it.
