disk smudge question

today when i took mtorstorm out of its case i smudged the disc, i put it in to play it and it said there was an error. are these bluray disk that senitave? the smudge covered about half the disk just to clarify my question.

Jeezus, the smudge covered half the disk, and you expected it to be read correctly? Seriously?

Blu-ray discs hold an incredible amount of data compared to a regular CD. They're the same size because the data is physically compressed close together on the disc. Since more data is covered in a shorter space, and the blu laser reads smaller pits on the disc, smudges are more apt to generate errors.

Get a soft lint free cloth and gently wipe that smut off.

one scratch can ruin a BR Disc, you gotta learn to be more careful!

ok, i thought i had a defective lense. thanks so i take it that bluray disks arnt durable?

No they are durable.....just not when you smudge half the disk. And anyone know why they are see through from the disk side not the cover side?

MattZani 07-08-2007 01:29 PM

because they are so fragile! the silver backing would muck up the laser, so its been made differently, and this made them very fragile.

you can see through the blu-ray disc because it uses a new form of technology to write informaton on the disc. This new burning technology burns the data closer to the surface of the disc. The blu-ray disc are then coated with a scratch resistant coating to protect the data. Basically because the data is burned closer to the surface you can see through it.

the disc are not fragile, just don't expect a disc to play when you smudge more than half of it.

Ok i knew they used a scratch resistant thing but didnt know why they are so thin thanks for clearing that up.To clean the discs if you need to use really really soft specialist cloths they work really well at cleaning discs AND the cover of the PS3.
