?How to avoid the overheating? Suggestions, tips.

Hi, well, I will get a PS3 80GB in this week, and I've heard problems about overheating (like X360, but this get overheating to much), then I want to know what tips or suggestions can you share to avoid this problem?

Because when I have free time, I can play all day, so that's my preocupation.

Like PS3 need to be better on Horizontal or Vertical position?
When you stop playing or anything and play again like half hour after,
It's better turn it off completely or put it on stand by?

Nyko sells fans for the ps3 ... you can mount them directly onto the ps3 and it will cool down the machine.

There aren't any problems with the PS3 overheating, that's only a 360 problem. Now, if you keep your PS3 in a small room like I used to, you may notice the room getting hot after a couple hours of play, but that's just due to the hot air the PS3 is expelling. Remember that it's good for the air coming out of the PS3 fans to be hot, it means that the cooling system is doing its job of keeping the PS3's innards cool.

I dunno about those Nyko fans though, I've heard some horror stories about those, especially with the 360 version, look at these reviews: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Nyko-...3839525&sr=1-1

I wouldn't worry about the PS3 overheating, Sony did a good job designing the hardware. I know people that leave their PS3s on for days to do Folding@Home, and they don't have any troubles with heating issues.

If you're that concerned about over heating, put it in a cooler room, with a good ventillation system and stand it on it's side, that way there's more room for heat to conduct away. It's never been a problem as far as I know, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Ok, thanks for your support.

I thought about it before and I'm going to buy just in case.

Gee, why design this device and comes to damage the console? I tough was 100% effective.

Ok, I will try to play not so much.

Ok, with a single Fan in the room can work?

NinjaSimon 12-10-2008 04:55 PM

Basically, for ventialtion, you need somewhere for the air to come from and somewhere for the air to go, so like a room with two doors, one at either end would work fine. a fan pretty much anywhere would help with the ventilation, just makesure it's not blowing the opposite way to the ps3's fan.

Nikhil 12-10-2008 05:01 PM

Yeah, if it's a large room even one open door would be fine. Don't cut down your play time just due to worries about overheating; like I said earlier, it's not a problem with the PS3, just don't play your PS3 inside a furnace :p

WINxTEC 12-10-2008 05:32 PM

Ok, thank you, guys.

you don't need a fan, ( i once went 18 hours straight playing some games) just make sure it has minimum 2 feet around it and that if you have a window open it because although the system won't get too hot, you will believe me

nabokovfan87 07-11-2008 06:22 PM

horiz position, but it really doent matter. as per overheating, i havent heard anything. my ps3 is in a hot room in so cal, i went and got a 50 dollar tower looking fan that cools my room good enough to keep the ps3 on its slowest fan speed. the fan is by lasko, its fantastic. if u want a fan specifically for the ps3, check out the one by pelican. the quality is a lot better then nyko and it uses an external power cord so it wont mess with the ps3

This in fact doesn't help, it sometimes causes more damage than good. The PS3 has a large fan mounted directly over it's center heatsink which can not be altered by this Nyko fan in any way. There is an on board temperature reader that speeds up fan rotation to accommodate for heat.

What I'm getting at is that you don't have to worry, PS3s only overheat if there is a problem with the heatsink or the internal main fan.

Reno 11-11-2008 01:16 PM

those nyko fans just pull the air out at a constant fast speed which can increase wear and tear on your ps3 fans if they dont need to be going that fast if you really need to cool it down play a floor fan next to it going over it and it should be perfect

Sauberbmw 11-11-2008 10:34 PM

not even, just open a window and you'll be good

SaintAvi 04-01-2009 12:33 AM

This has been answered already but in case anyone is wondering, the PS3 is
extremely difficult to overheat. I don't recommend trying this but just watch this.
They purposely try to overheat the machine but it just compensates by upping
the fan speed, to quote the guy in the video "This thing is blowing like a f*cking tornado"

get off your lazy arce and give your PS3 a break. It's not it's job to entertain you 24hrs a day. if you were entertaining yourself 24/7 you'd over heat too.

i have not heard of to many problems withthe 360 but the best thing you coudl do is get one of those fan addons or just keep it in a nice ventelated area

Dustin S. 06-06-2009 02:25 PM

The trick is to walk down the Walmart Fan aisle, near the end they have these super mini fans, for like computer desks and what not. Within that section is this metal fan
Looks like this but ultra small http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=9204060

Its only 5 bucks, buy it, and take it home. Plug it in near your TV and set it behind the PS3, pointed in its general direction near the open vents, and keep it on. Its not loud, it works extremely well, and it keeps COOL air flowing through the vents of the PS3. Ive done this almost since PS3 launched and my PS3 has never once kicked into another gear and is alway cool when i check it.

Dipchit02 07-06-2009 01:41 AM

wow that is actually a really good idea cuz i have mine kick on to HIGH gear after about an hour or two of intense gaming i think i will have to go pick one of them up
