No video when playing a disc?

I have a BRAND NEW 60gb PS3 from Circuit City going out of business. Apparently they had a few in the back they never sold, then found them when they liquidated.
I can't find the receipt, and thus there is no proof that I just bought the damn thing. So SONY would want the $125 service fee.

Anyway, I turn the system on with the switch in the back. Then I press the power button. The system starts up normal, and goes to the dash board. Everything works fine, and I can even use the Internet. But as soon as I try to play a disc, the screen goes blank (like normal) but it never comes back on. It just stays black.
Then, if I turn the unit off and right back on, I continue to have a blank screen. I found that if I turn it off with the power switch, let it sit for 5 minutes or more, then turn it all back on, I can get back to the dash board.
But as soon as I try to play a disc, same issue.

Sony tech support had me turn the unit off, then when I turn it back on, hold the power button for 5 seconds and wait for a second beep. This makes the unit reset the resolution settings. This works about 50% of the time and gets me back to the dash board w/o having to completely turn it off for the 5 minute wait. The other 50% of the time it doesn't do anything and I do have to turn the whole thing off for 5 minutes.

I'm really hoping to find a quick setting fix to resolve this, but nothing seems to help. I really don't want to have to send it to Sony or try to find another one.

Any help on a setting fix?

I really don't know what to tell you man. If I were in your shoes, I would have just bought an 80gb :P
The 60gbs are the only model known to do stuff like this. I say send er in to Sony if you're really that keen on keeping the 60gb, that or buy a ps2 for $99 lol, they're gonna cost about the same price anyways (the fix and the ps2)

I suggest that you try replacing the wires that connect the ps3 to the tv. then take a kleenex and was your discs with water and dry them and blow inside the disc tray of the ps3. try that and see how it works out

I think if you just bought the system you might be able to use it's serial number for warranty issues. Not sure, but maybe.
