Even the Feds have PlayStation 3's

Although not for gaming purposes, they have taken a bunch of PlayStation 3's, installed Linux onto them, combined them together and created one powerful computer for one purpose, breaking encryption passwords. The PlayStation 3 network of machines is so powerful it can process around 4 million possible password combination a second (thanks in part to the Cell and the graphics processor available), plus the PlayStation 3 is also around $8,000 cheaper per unit than what the old computer to break passwords ran on. Let's see the XBOX 360 or the Wii do that.

Seems more than just the feds want them, the U.S Air Force apparently just placed an order for 2,200 PlayStation 3 consoles from Sony to expand their current 336 cluster of PlayStation 3's in Rome, N.Y for research purposes. Even the world's second fastest supercomputer, the IBM Roadrunner is using Cell broadband chips to power it's processing technology.
