older games on Windows 7

okay, I'm having problems getting Starcraft 1 and Diablo 2 working on my laptop.
usually they won't load but when they do load, their colours are really screwed up.
is it that they just don't work on Windows 7 or is there some way i can get them working

Some older games do have issues, but Starcraft runs fine for me. You should try running it as adminstrator, if that doesnt work go to properties and put it to "run in XP mode" and it should be fine.

which "run in xp mode" do you mean?
when I click on properties and look for "run in xp mode" I find "service pack 2" and "service pack 3"

That's because what you're looking at are just the Compatibility settings, which makes changes so older programs might work. XP Mode on the other hand runs an entire copy of Windows XP in the background for programs that will not work with Windows 7. That being said, XP Mode is not installed be default on any Windows 7 installation and you must have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate to download the feature (Home Premium or Windows 7 Starter don't qualify). Anyway here's the Microsoft page for XP Mode so if you got a qualifying copy of 7, just download and install the file and then you can do as Dustin indicated.

I couldn't get it working with what you gave me x_racer
but I have some good news, I got Diablo 2 working by uninstalling it and downloading it off of battle.net instead of installing it with the cd.
I never thought I'd be so happy for that service
