No. it is impossible to get a virus on a ps3 due to the fact that "it has to be digitally signed and manually unpacked which is one, impossible and 2, fail proof"*
the reason you cant get a virus is because of the seventh cell processor or the security chip as i like to call it. it does a bunch of checks on any content you download or check. if any of those checks which i believe are 30 in totall fail, then it is rejected.

* member from this site posted it in help, my ps3 has a virus or something like that

Very unlikely but more likely if you decide to install an OS on it.

people can get viruses on their ps3 by taking it apart and trying to do some hacks but u would have to be dedicated to geting a virus without taking it apart. besides they spend so much money on security for these things so your safe u can go ahead and look at that porn lol jk

I agree with Nicarlo ... if you install an OS you have way higher chances. I havent heard of "PS3" Viruses yet...

speaking of complete hack no it cant be done right now because sony hasnt opened up the 7th cell which runs your ps3, not even for linux. Which is why you cant install pc games on the linux i believe? The ps3 is also locked down like fort knox, we even had an article here all about why the ps3 hasnt been hacked.

However a virus can be succesful just by taking over what it can, so therefore ps3 isnt full proof. When the sales start picking up and a cracker (term used for hackers that do this) feels like he can hit the right amount of people, we might see it happen. will it destroy your ps3, no it will just do what it can on the open cells, then sony will fix it somehow and something else will happen. Sooner or later we will see hacks like the psp and such too. Like stated never say never, but as of right now your safe...

like someone said, its not IMPOSSIBLE but virus makers wouldnt spend too much time on a virus to infect PS3's. I mean what would it possibly give them? If anything they would dedicate their time on making a virus for a system like windows where a much larger amount of people are using.

Just my 2 cents

Plus people have to download it and the ps store doesnt support user content and there are very limited sites which you can download off of and the security on the sytem is better then what most people have, so yeah, it can be done, but it will take quite a while

Not a virus, but pretty intrusive. if it happened to Microsoft, you can bet your **** it can happen to Sony

It's kinda like what Macintosh users brag about. It's not that a Mac can't have a virus, it's not that Linux can't get a virus. It's that writers of viruses usually have some type of motivation like to obtain massive amounts of information or even just to cause general chaos and alarm and releasing a virus for ps3, 360, wii, mac, or linux would just be a waste of their time compared to the everyone in the entire world who uses windows.

I agree, if someone was dedicated and had some time on their hands, they probably could

At the same time why make a virus that bypasses the system when you can turn it into a hack for the system and make a bunch of money from it.

personally, I think it would take someone with way too much time on their hands to make a virus to harm a PS3, and to what effect, not to sound negative, but there'll probably be a new system on the market by the time someone does make a virus to target the PS3, then the virus maker pretty much just wasted their time, not that it matters if that person has a lot of time on their hands anyways

The main point being what is any hacker going to gain from a PS3 virus, personal information isn't stored on the console, and your credit card number if you attached one is obscured so only a few digits are accessible. It's not like your home PC which can have a ton of personal information, it's a game console, it's not what it's meant for. If though you install another operating system such as Linux then you are at risk as now your PlayStation 3 is just like any other PC, albeit with Linux so your chances are still low since Linux hasn't had any real viruses, not enough people use it. I believe though while the 7th Cell is barred from access by Linux the main problem is Linux also can't access the RSX Graphics processor so everything has to be carried out on the Cell, which is why Linux never really works well with the PlayStation 3, the Cell and 256MB of RAM just isn't enough for anything major in computing.
