You know there is a little friendly competition going around here in the gaming industry. Okay I lied a little, EA actually wants Call of Duty dead or in their hands. Yes the leading shooter (on consoles at least) is finally starting to heat up some competition. To take back control and win over shooter fans EA has made the weapon of choice to be Battlefield. However, EA doesn’t realize they actually have way more suitable titles under their belt to take that shot.
They already failed miserably with Medal of Honor. While the single player was breathtaking, the online portion lacked support. EA seemed to have no faith in the title, even though they stated it would dent Call of Duty, and didn’t bother offering much to the fans of the series beyond the game. It was still a killer game, but it didn’t do its job. A second is surely on the way, but by that time who knows what will happen.
Now they have Battlefield 3, and to say it looks amazing wouldn’t be saying enough. However Medal of Honor also looked fantastic. Let’s face it there are a ton of great shooters out there that look mind blowing. Killzone 3, Crysis 2, the list is endless. Some have even gone as far as to tinker with gameplay settings to make them a bit more easier for Call of Duty fans. Which is where Call of Duty shines, the arcade aspects with tiny realistic aspects mixed in the small cracks. These games that try to fight it off are a bit harder, require strategy or team work, and are not as easy to jump into for an hour or two whenever you want. DICE is known for a certain aspect of gameplay. Big epic battles, and harder gameplay due to their engine. Will Battlefield 3 be able to offer this while having the arcade aspects?
Well that brings me to my point, finally I know, but why bother? Why bother bringing a series like Battlefield to Call of Duty levels? Instead why not re-introduce a franchise that was extremely popular back in last generation. You know a little know title called….BLACK. BLACK was the leading title visually on PS2, and people couldn’t get enough of it. There was hardly a story, but people didn’t care. Which proves this is the perfect title to take on Call of Duty.
BLACK followed Black Ops in the story, it offered that Hollywood style tone, and even had a similar script to Call of Duty Black Ops. The most important aspect of BLACK was its mayhem it offered. You blew shit up to get anywhere you wanted…end of story. It was pure arcade adrenaline fun that offered crazy gameplay at every turn. Call of Duty was attempting to be a more “realistic” high end shooter until recently. They seemed to have jumped that ship and turned the franchise into a more BLACK style game.
So EA you have a game sitting on your shelves that you could easily reinvent and make compete with Call of Duty. Easily! So why not do it?
