DVD Review: Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Chipmunk Adventure

Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Chipmunk Adventure

DVD Review

Paramount

Release: April 1, 2008

Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Chipmunk Adventure features everyone’s favorite chipmunks in their first-ever feature film. The chipmunks go on a huge adventure which has them taking part in a hot air balloon race. The film originally made its debut back in 1987 and has been completely re-mastered on DVD.

The film is an adventure which spans across the entire globe. Dave Seville, their guardian, leaves for a trip to Europe. He places Alvin, Simon and Theodore under the supervision of a nanny, who really has no clue what is going on.

The three chipmunks head to the mall and meet up with some friends, Britney, Jeanette, and Eleanor.

From here, the story gets very strange. A pair of diamond thieves talk the chipmunks into delivering their stolen diamonds to Europe. They do so by having them take part in a hot air balloon race. At each stop on the race, they drop off dolls. What the chipmunks do not know though is that the dolls are filled with diamonds. They then pick up new dolls, filled with money.

The feature is very strange, but also rather entertaining as well. All of the songs, the fast-paced movement of the plot, etc. will keep chipmunks tuned in. Is it weird? Definitely. But is it fun? It actually is.

The video quality is pretty decent, along with the audio. The video is presented in Full Screen format and has been digitally re-mastered from the original 35mm film. The colors are vibrant and there is only minimal grain. It may not be as perfect, but due to its age it gets a pass in a sense. The colors could have been brighter.

The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and is technically solid. The songs and action from the film are presented nicely, filling up the surround speakers. The dialogue coming through the front channel was also nicely done.

You do not get much in terms of special features on the DVD itself, as the only added feature is the original artwork from the film. The other big extra though is a free CD thrown in with the soundtrack from the feature-film. You get 11 music tracks on the CD, with some quality chipmunk songs kids and older fans should enjoy.

Overall Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Chipmunk Adventure is a decent release on the DVD format, as the film has received a nice upgrade in terms of its video transfer from its original release. The audio is well-done, and the added CD soundtrack gives it great value. The film itself is definitely weird, but overall an enjoyable package.

Film: 7.8

It is definitely strange, but the film is enjoyable.

Video: 7.5

An improvement over the original in terms of video quality, nice clarity and colors.

Audio: 8.0

It won’t win any technical awards, but everything sounds solid with nice use of the surround channels for all of the chipmunk songs.

Extras: 7.0

The added CD soundtrack gives it nice value, nothing really in terms of extras on the DVD itself though.

Final Score: 7.2
