The Hills – The Complete Third Season

DVD Review

Paramount Home Entertainment

MTV

Released: July 29, 2008

MTV has brought back their reality drama The Hills once again, with a very successful third season on the cable network. MTV has teamed up with Paramount to release the third season on DVD, with plenty of drama and stress to be had for all.

The Hills, for those who do not know, follows a group of young men and women trying to make it big in the Los Angeles area.

The show brings back the well-known characters such as Spencer, Lauren, Whitney, Heidi, Audrina, and others.

They are a little bit older in the third season, as they have different jobs, but that doesn’t mean that their social lives have changed at all.

The group still has their enemies, as Lauren and Heidi are going toe to toe throughout the entire season, and things take a turn for the worse between Spencer and Heidi.

There is a reason why The Hills has managed to be so successful, as it takes the idea of an unscripted show to the max, with more drama packed into each episode than just about any soap opera out there right now.

For the MTV crowd, each episode packs in plenty of music with a great soundtrack, as well as some classic events.

The third season of The Hills is made up of 28 episodes across four discs, with more than enough to please any fan of the series.

The video quality is pretty solid, as it is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The colors and flesh-tones come across very natural throughout each and every episode.

Going beyond that, the sharpness varies from episode to episode, as some of them do look much better than others depending on the scenery. Most of the episodes though have few artifacts, and look of high quality.

The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and comes across nicely as all of the dialogue is presented well. The music also is presented on the front channels nicely, but comes across a little loud at points.

In terms of extras, you get plenty of deleted content spread across 24 scenes, spanning over 40 minutes.

You have the option to watch them all at once in one big chunk, and include some great new content fans of the show may have never seen before.

Beyond that, you get all four of the major stars of the show in interviews, as you get to learn more about Lauren, Heidi, Audrina, and Whitney. The interviews last nearly 40-minutes as well.

The producers of the show worked to put together the highlights of the season, as you get the four girls doing two commentaries throughout the montage of sorts.

Rounding out the extras include a promo link for the Virtual Hills, as well as 8 segments from the MTV fashion designer series Fashion: The Life.

The Hills is the highest rated program on MTV for a reason, as it presents an incredible amount of drama, along with some nice-looking young men and women. Combine those two factors, and there is no surprise that its target audience can’t get enough of the show. With plenty of content, and a load of extras, this is absolutely a must buy for any fan of The Hills!

Episodes: 8.5

A great season of The Hills with tons of drama and events taking place.

Video: 7.5

The video quality comes across very clear, but some scenes look better than others.

Audio: 8.0

The dialogue is presented well, but the music comes across as too loud at times.

Special Features: 9.0

Paramount and MTV did an amazing job with the extras here, as there is tons and tons of content for fans of the show.

Final Score: 8.7
