Pretty in Pink (I Love The 80s Edition) DVD Review Paramount Home Entertainment Released: August 5, 2008
Pretty in Pink released back in 1986, and immediately caught on as a huge success, starring Andrew McCarthy and Molly Ringwald. This was one of the sensations of the 80s, as it presented a very memorable love story by John Hughes.
Paramount Home Entertainment has teamed up with VH1 to help promote a brand new line of DVDs called "I Love The 80s." The idea behind this set-up is to help celebrate the decade of top films throughout the 80s, starting with a batch of 5, and eventually releasing 40 classic titles in 80s retro packaging. Pretty in Pink (I Love The 80s Edition) is one of the first five films to release in the series.
Pretty in Pink was written and produced by John Hughes, best known for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
The film starred Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy, playing the roles of two teens named Andie and Blane.
Andie has a rough time in school, as it is safe to say that she had a hard time being different, as she was constantly picked on by the rich blond girls. All is not bad in her world though, as she has a best friend named Duckie (Jon Cryer) as well as a potential love interest with Blane.
Andie and Blane decide to go out on a date, and from there the issues really begin to showcase themselves, as neither is accepted by the other’s social group. This does not stop Blane one bit though, who decides to ask Andie to the prom.
Things take a quick turn for the worse though for Andie, as Blane tries to retract his invite to prom, leaving Andie all alone.
The film is a great teen romance, and there is no surprise after watching it why it was such a major success.
The video quality is presented nicely as it features some deep and rich colors. There are some spots where you can pick out some grain, but for the most part the film looks good.
The audio mix does a great job of allowing the dialogue to take over, as it comes across strong without being overly-powerful. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1
Unfortunately, the only extra comes in the form of an add-in four-track music CD, which songs including Lips Like Sugar, Chains of Love, Need You Tonight, and Take On me.
Pretty in Pink is a very fun film to watch, and will surely bring you back to the 80s when you sit down and watch it again, immediately remembering the characters Duckie, Blane, and others. If you already own this on DVD, there is no reason to double-dip. If not though, this is a safe buy.
