Sony Computer Entertainment has lost one of their biggest exclusive franchises in the Devil May Cry franchise.  It was long believed that the blockbuster next-generation title was going to be an exclusive game for the Sony PlayStation 3.  It seems now though that this has completely changed.

Capcom has made the announcement today that the highly-anticipated action game Devil May Cry 4 is in development on not only the Sony PlayStation 3, but also on the Xbox 360 and PC.  Each version of the game is being developed to take the strengths of the consoles and push them to the fullest to create the best experience possible on all three platforms.

Devil May Cry 4 will not even be exclusive on the PlayStation 3 for a short period of time as Capcom confirmed that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will be releasing simultaneously.

“Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible, and has been building its technology base to meet that goal,” said Mark Beaumont, executive vice president, officer and head of Capcom consumer software publishing in the and Europe . “This announcement means that PS3, Xbox 360 and PC owners worldwide will be able to experience the latest installment of one of Capcom’s pillar franchises.”

The producer of the original Devil May Cry and Resident Evil 4 is hard at work on Devil May Cry 4 to create one of the most memorable next-generation experiences to date with a new leading hero to take the place of Dante.  Players will play as Nero and use his “Devil Bringer” arm to wreak hell on all who come before them.

This should be seen as a huge disappointment to Sony PlayStation 3 owners as this was being billed as one of the great exclusives for the console.  Now it just adds up to being another victory for Xbox 360 owners out there and gives another reason to avoid dropping the $600 on purchase a PlayStation 3 if one of the other two platforms is owned and can run Devil May Cry 4.  We’ll have more on this announcement as it breaks along with any more news for the day.

With rising development costs of these next-generation games it should be interesting to see if any other former-exclusives begin to change and go multi-platform.  Rumors around games such as Metal Gear Solid 4 going multi-platform continue to persist as do rumors on many other games.  Only time will tell where they end up.
